Classics to Catch up on

Every generation has film and television shows that define them. However, your generation might not be defined by some of these classics. Maybe your parents or a pretentious movie buff has been hassling you for years to watch "the greatest movie ever" or "best series hands down."

Most of us have increased our streaming due to social distancing measures. So we're here with some recommendations for classics to catch up on.

Netflix

The Godfather Part 1,2,and 3:

I'll make you an offer you can't refuse; watch the first two installments of this classic trilogy.

To me, The Godfather 1 & 2 are two of the greatest films of all time. There are amazing performances from Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Diane Keaton, and Robert Duvall (just to name a few). It's old, but it still holds up.

I'll be honest, I didn't watch the third. But the first two are must watch cinema.

The Lord of the Rings Trilogylord-of-the-rings-fellowship-of-the-ring-vertical

Maybe it was The Godfather, or Star Wars, or even Back to the Future that defined your childhood. For me, it was The Lord of the Rings. Director Peter Jackson created a world without cutting corners. Instead of overusing CGI, Jackson used forced perspective and miniature sets to create much of Middle Earth.

The Lord of the Rings has everything; fantasy, magic, amazing action sequences, CGI that has stood the test of time, and of course, barefoot hiking.

The trilogy took home 17 academy awards, with The Return of the King taking 11 (tied for the record). I would imagine most people have watched this, but if you haven't prepare yourself for 9+ hours of cinematic masterpiece.

Crave

The Wirethe wire

This HBO series follows the Baltimore drug scene, seen through the eyes of the drug dealers and law enforcement. The Wire is the most well written series I've ever watched. Each scene has an impact and every character serves a purpose.

Seasons start with a unique viewpoint and focus. I'm only partway through season 2 as I type this, but The Wire is already guaranteed to make my top 5 favourite shows.

After years of desperate pleas from relatives and friends I finally took the plunge and started The Wire. You should too.

The Sopranos

Another program that helped define HBO was The Sopranos. This series follows New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano has he deals with personal and professional issues in his home and business life.

Led by the late James Gandolfini, The Sopranos is touted as one of the greatest television shows of all time. Now is the time to find out for yourself.
